Building an iberian network of oral history
Set in motion an iberian oral history network
On June 19 and 20, 2023, we held the VII INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR: BUILDING AN IBERIAN NETWORK OF ORAL HISTORY, in the city of Bilbao, sponsored by the Experiencia Moderna Research Group of the University of the Basque Country/EHU and AHOA, Oral History Archive. It brings together about forty researchers and archival experts from Spain and Portugal in the field of oral history. The idea has been to discuss, on the one hand, the possibility of creating a network of oral history, on the other, to put an end to the isolation of these investigations, and finally to bring all those interested in oral history into contact. The idea has been welcomed in a very positive way by those present at the seminar and, as a result of this willingness, a number of agreements have been reached for the implementation of an Iberian network of oral history (see agreement document). In addition to the wills of all the people present, the idea is to expand and strengthen the network. The sessions have presented and discussed projects on oral history in different places and topics: memory, emotions, subjectivity in oral history; dictatorships, transitions and migrations in the Iberian world; rural world and cultural traditions, archives and teaching experiences in oral history, etc. The organizers believe that the call has been a success and that the meeting is a first step towards building, in an open and democratic way, an Iberian Network of Oral History.

RESOLUTIONS OF THE SESSION OF 19 JUNE 2023
1. Agreement that it should not be a heavy structure and that the Network should be
useful for its members.
2. The ideas of creating a mailing list, a web site and some kind of meeting to bring
people and their research experiences closer together are welcomed. In principle, and due to funding problems, these meetings should be online. But we will need to measure the number of meetings, not abuse them.
3. Interest in creating working groups for the different initiatives.
4. Although the prospect of creating a journal is desirable, in principle, joint publications should be considered. Perhaps a dossier in History of the Present, in Words and Silences, but with a certain thematic coherence.
5. Extend the Network to the sectors that are more weakly represented in these meetings.
This is the case of Portuguese historians and, on another level, of the work being
carried out in the field of archives of trade unions’ oral sources.
6. We will soon be in contact with each other to take the first steps in the
coordination of the working groups
